RV Celtic Voyager 2012 annual refit completed at Mooney Boats Ltd

Mooney Boats Ltd has just completed a major refit of the RV Celtic Voyager for P&O Maritime Services Galway. The yard submitted a tender for the project on the 4th November 2011 when they replied to a tender they had seen for the refit. Mooney Boats Ltd were delighted when they signed the contract on the 12 December 2011 for the job and won it against some larger shipyards which were also tendering.

The contract was tight and the vessel had to be handed back over to her owners before the 28th January 2012 and the work schedule could not commence until the 4th January due to the vessels busy schedule. So the weeks before Christmas the yard were busy planning the project and arranging all subcontractors so that everything would run smoothly.

The vessel was put up on the Synchrolift on the 4th January at approx 1pm. She was pressure washed from top to bottom inside and out on the 4th and 5th. While the washing was taking place the A Frame was taken of the vessel the bottom tank plugs were removed and the anchor chains where removed from the vessel. The rudder was also removed and the work on overhauling the main engine also began. The vessel was then put inside the repair bay on Thursday evening so the preparation for the painting could begin.

On the Friday the tail shaft was removed from the vessel and taken back to Mooney Boats Ltd machine shop where the propeller blades and hub were taken apart by the boatyards engineers for inspection by Lloyd’s surveyor. The yard engineers were also busy disconnecting the main engine and getting ready to lift it up of its engine beds so that the engine could be completely stripped down and rebuilt.

Over the first weekend the vessel was left so that the shot blasting crew could move in and get the shot blasting completed over that weekend which would mean that Mooney Boast Ltd engineers could go straight back into work on the Monday morning with as little disruption as possible.

Over the next 2 weeks there was a swarm of men on the vessel carrying out various different jobs on the ship which included the following

The Chief Super looking after the project for P&O Maritime Services Ian Lloyd Own was delighted with the way Mooney Boats Ltd completed the project and said it was one of the least stress full dry-docks he ever completed. He complimented the yards staff and all the people who worked on the refit to Lee Mooney on completion of the Job. This was Ian last job for P&O Maritime Services Ltd as he has moved back home to Wales were he has taken over as yard manager in Swansea dry-dock.

Mooney Boats Ltd would really like to thank P&O Maritime Services for been awarded the contract and wish the RV Celtic Voyager and the crew many more trouble free days sailing on the ship.
