“MFV MARIA”

Mooney Boats Ltd has just completed a major refurbishment of the Mussel Dredger the MFV Maria SO 964 with an Overall Length of 33.92 m and beam of 6.5m. The yard was approached by Michael & Fergal Halvin of Tully Shellfish in August 2010 to see if they would be interested in tendering for the job on the vessel. The yard was delighted to be considered and fought off competition from other yards in the UK & Holland to win the contract in March 2011.

The vessel was dry-docked on the synchrolift where the vessels bottom structure from frame 23 to frame 49 which included the bottom plating, the hold double bottom in numbers 1 and 2 holds was completely cut away including tank top and all stiffening. Bulkheads 24, 37 & 48 were cut approx 1m above the keel plate and replaced. All side shell outer & inner hold plating was cut approx 1m above keel and removed. All old bilge suction pipes were removed along with the 4 x 400mm discharge pipes and valves from the holds.

When the vessel was been prepared on the Synchrolift Mooney Boats Ltd welders were busy fabricated the new double bottom section in the fabrication shop. When the cutting was completed the yard lifted the new section onto Sean Wards flat bed lorry and transported the section over to the synchrolift where Conal Gallagher lifted the section into position with his new 200 Ton crane.

The new steel section was fabricated from EN 10025-S275JR Lloyds Grade A certified steel plate. The btm plating was 10mm and side shell plating was also 10mm. A new keel bar 300mm x 20mm and capped with 80mm x 10mm flat bar was fitted between frame 23 & 49. New 60mm solid steel chine bars were fitted in the new section and connected into the remaining steel work. The yard also replace all the bilge piping with 3” S/S bilge suction pipes and new strainer boxes were fitted.

Mooney Boats Ltd also supplied and fitted 4 new 400mm Zubi Model 200 Cast Iron Knife Gate Valve PN10with 316 Blade & EPDM Seal fitted with Hydraulic Actuator. These valves are used as the hold discharge doors. After completion of all steel works the vessel was cleaned down and prepared for painting. Mooney Boats Ltd supplied a Jotun & Clarke paint system for the vessel which was applied by Gerard Bray & Sons Ltd.

While the MFV Maria in the yard getting the bottom replaced Michael and Fergal availed of the opportunity of putting her through her Code Of Practice. This also meant other work for Mooney Boats Ltd which included the Ultra Sonic Inspection of the remaining hull plating and also checking tail shafts rudder bushings, valves and safety equipment along with other work. Mooney Boats Ltd is now fully certified by DNV & BV for ultrasonic hull inspection and can travel where required to carry out this work on various vessels. The MFV Maria was put up on the Synchrolift on the 6th April 2011 and all work was completed on the 13 June 2011. During the project all work was inspected by the Marine Survey Office. The vessel is now back in Redcastle in Co Donegal and Mooney Boats Ltd wish Michael and Fergal continued success with the vessel.
