MFV “Northern Celt” Hull Repairs

On the 4th December 2011 the MFV Northern Celt owned by Adrian Mc Clenaghan got into difficulties of the North WestDonegalCoast after leaving the port of Killybegs earlier that day and hit rocks which damaged the underside of the vessels. Adrian contacted Lee Mooney on Monday the 5th January to see could he get the vessel up on the Synchrolift as soon as possible to access the damage. The lift was booked out but David Kirwan was contacted to see if Adrian vessel could take his slot on the lift as this was an emergency case and David kindly agreed.

The Synchrolift cradles were prepared and the vessel was lifted out of the water on the 7th of December. The Marine Survey office arrived on site to access the damage to the vessel and immediately a repair plan was put into place. Mooney Boats Ltd were conscious of the fact that Adrian wanted to get the vessel back fishing as soon as possible and the yard put in a huge effort to get the vessel repaired and back in the water before they closed for there Christmas holidays on the 23rd December.

It was unfortunate the way the vessel got damaged and the yard had repairs to do on both port and starboard sides of the vessel which meant they had to go into 4 separate tanks on the vessel. Over the next 2 weeks the damaged steel on the vessels was removed and then new plates where fitted, all under the watchful eye of the Marine Survey Office. This involved removing all the diesel fuel oil from the double btm tanks and then the tanks had to be De-gassed before any cutting or welding could take place. The fresh water tanks were also damaged and they also had to be cleaned out to gain access.

The fibreglass and insulation in parts of the fishroom had to be removed to gain access to the damaged steel plates above the btm chine bar. The yard also had to remove concrete from the floor of the tanks to gain access to repair any damage. After the tanks were cleaned the engineers cut out the damaged steel plates and then fitted the new steel plates and frames. After completion of al the steel work the tanks were closed up and air tested by the yard to make sure there were know leaks. This was all under survey by the M.S.O.

The steam of the vessel was also damaged was damaged which was repaired. The vessel also damaged the btm part of the rudder stock and heal bearing which were removed and taken to Mooney Boats Ltd machine shop where they were machined and repaired. The heal bearing and rudder stock were then fitted back on the vessel and welded into position.

On completion of all the work the vessel was painted with a Jotun & Clarke paint system which was supplied by Mooney Boats Ltd. The Marine Survey office and the owner’s representatives inspected all of the work which was done by the yard and the Mfv Northern Celt was put back in the water on the 22nd December 1 day ahead of schedule.

The management and staff of Mooney Boats Ltd would like to thank Adrian once again for all the work and wish the Mfv Northern Celt and all here crew a safe and prosperous 2012.
