MFV Glora Na TDONN Hits Rocks and needs immediate Repairs

Mooney Boats Ltd has just completed a major refurbishment on the MFV “Glora Na TDONN” which is owned by Sean Flaherty Rossaveal Co Galway. On Tuesday 16th November 2011 the MFV Glor Na TDONN got into difficulties of the north Donegal Coast while fishing for Herring. The vessel lost power and drifted over rocks and damaged her btm and stern gear. The vessel was towed into Rathmullen where she was inspected by insurance authorities and the Marine Survey office.

Sean contacted Mooney Boats Ltd that morning immediately once he new what damaged had been caused and said he needed the vessel repaired as soon as possible. So the yard prepared the syncrolift so the vessel could be lifted immediately. The yard got Sinbad Marine Services Ltd to tow the vessel from Rathmullen to Killybegs and the vessel was lifted out of the water on the 20 November.

The yard began work immediately as there was substantial damage to the keel and btm plating. The nozzle and Heimdal stern gear were also badly damaged. The first job the yard done was removing the stern gear from the vessel. This was then packed and shipped back to Heimdal in Norway for assessment. The decision was made quickly that a new propeller hub was going to be required along with a new tailshaft. Heimdal managed to save the propeller blades which were reconditioned. The delivery on the new stern gear took approx 9 weeks.

In that time the yard carried out other work on the vessel. The rudder shaft was badly damaged and new one had to be made up which was done in house by Mooney Boats Ltd in there Machine Shop. The Nozzle had to be cut of the ship and taking to yards fabrication shop for repairs and this was then refitted. The sonar pipes were all damaged and new ones were manufactured and fitted by the yard along with all the steel work on the ballast keel. The vessel also damaged here Bow Thruster when she hit which was also removed by the yard and rebuilt and refitted.

The vessels gearbox was badly damaged which was stripped by the yard along with Patsy Craven from Pat Rynn Engineering and rebuilt when the vessel was in dry-dock. After the new stern gear was delivered from Heimdal Norway week 3 2011 it was fitted back in the vessel as soon as it arrived. The vessel was put back in the water on Friday 4th February and towed to the Town pier in Killybegs. The engine and gearbox were then checked for alignment by the yard and successful setrials were carried out by the yard on the 9th February 2011. Sean immediately put his vessel MFV Glor Na TDONN back to fish as the lucrative Mackerel Spring fishery was in full swing.

The complete job which Mooney Boats Ltd carried out on the “MFV Glor Na TDONN ” took just under 11 weeks excluding the Christmas Holidays from when work was started on the vessel. Mooney Boats Ltd” would like to thank Sean Flaherty and his crew for giving the yard the opportunity to carry out all the work and wish them continued success with there vessel the “MFV Glor Na TDONN ”
