Inishbofin Ferry “Island Discovery” Visits Killybegs Yard

On the 8th November 2011 Mooney Boats Ltd had a new visitor to the yard, it was Pat Concannon`s vessel the Island Discovery. Pat contacted Lee earlier in the year to see if the yard would be interested in carrying out the annual survey work on the Island Discovery. Pat was keen to keep the vessel in services as long as possible during the summer season but also new it was difficult to do any painting or repairs in the Irish winter time. Once Mooney Boats Ltd new the weight of the vessel they agreed with Pat that they would take the vessel out on there 75Ton travel lift and all work could be completed indoors in there yard where the weather would not effect them

The Island discovery arrived in Killybegs and was immediately lifted out of the water where the underside of the hull was pressure washed and also the top sides. On completion the vessel was taken inside Mooney boats Ltd yard where she was safe form the famous Irish weather and the work could begin unaffected.

Pat had a list of work which he wanted done which included the following. Some plating on the hull of the vessel was cut out and replaced. The yard air tested the skeg on the vessel and repaired any leaks. The hand rail was cut of port and starboard side of the vessel was cut of and a new galvanised steel handrails was fitted by the yard and when this was been done the yard also strengthened the existing bulwarks on the vessel. New gates where fabricated and fitted on the starboard side of the vessel and the bollards and cleats where also repositioned when this work was taking place.

Other works included carpentry works in the wheelhouse, new aluminium windows frames where manufactures by the yard and fitted in the passenger area, modifications works to the aluminium superstructure which included new s/s drains, new baggage room with access door fitted on the back of wheelhouse. The engineroom air intakes where modified which gave more room for passengers on the top deck of the vessel.

When the steel and aluminium fabrication work was completed the vessel was taken out side the yard where her main deck was Water Blasted over a weekend and she was then taken back inside the yard so the painting could start. Gerard Bray and his team then started on the painting of vessel. Pat decided to change his paint system when the vessel was in the yard to a Jotun & Clarke 2 pack paint system. Over the following week Gerard and his team transformed the look of the vessel and brought her back to looking as if she was new.

When the vessel was in the yard Pat and his own crew also worked on maintenance jobs which they had to do on the vessel. They had the use of the yard canteen and anything they needed they could just walk up to Mooney Boats Ltd Marine Chandlery shop and get immediately. “Pat told Lee Mooney that he though the services and facilities in the yard were first class and he would definitely be using Mooney Boats Ltd yard again”

The vessel was put back into the water on a exactly 1 month later on the 8th December 2011 and sea trials where completed the following day and everything was perfect. Pat and the crew left Killybegs early on Saturday the 10 December and where back working that evening in Inishbofin.

The management and staff of Mooney Boats Ltd would like to thank Pat and his crew once again for all the work they gave the yard and wish the “Island Discovery” and all here crew a safe and prosperous 2012.
